04/04/03 Canadian Ergonomic Study Update

This program on the ergonomic study that started in March is proceeding as intended. Bill Houston, the programs trainer, is continuing to work wiith local drywall contractors in the metro Toronto area instructing them on the finishing tools. We registered a number of purchased tools by independent contractors as a result of this study.

Study Midstate Education and Service Foundation
Researchers: Greg Shaw, Tom Joyce

Greg presented their independent, 3-year study in a seminar on the ergonomics of drywall finishing. They wanted to find out how finishing tools and techniques affect repetitive strain injuries in the finishing trade. Strapped with (EMG) electrodes that indicate the muscle strain in numerical values, the drywall finishers used conventional boxes, spring-assisted boxes (that's 10 times easier). Even better, Apla-Tech tools took only 2% of the muscle force over conventional boxes. That is 50 times easier according to this study. For more in-depth reading of the study as it was printed and presented at the conference, click here. Also, look for a write up on the seminar in the July 2002 issue of Walls & Ceilings.

Facts Did You Know?

If you paper tape an inside 90° angle and wipe it out by hand, skim coating over the angle with a mechanical angle head can create an edging problem. Where you see the bad edge, you will see tape in the angle. Using a roller or Roll-Plow to set the tape will eliminate the problem and give you beautifully feathered edges with an angle head.
